University costs rise again
Students and their families are facing ever-increasing costs as new figures indicate that the price of student accommodation has risen significantly in recent years.
According to an NUS and Unipol report, the average cost of university accommodation has increased by 23 per cent in the past two years to its current figure of £82 a week.
This figure is up 37 per cent on 2001 and comes at a time when costs for students are soaring, with £2,000 of top up fees recently added to tuition fees of £1,000.
"This is a timely reminder that the increased price and lack of choice of university accommodation will need to be addressed to truly ensure poorer students can access higher education," explained NUS vice-president for welfare, Veronica King.
The NUS is particularly worried about the proliferation of private accommodation providers, which are offering expensive en suite facilities at the cost of cheaper options for those less well off.
London is the most expensive place for student accommodation in the UK, with average weekly rents of £100.
