Brits plan sedate New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is overpriced and overrated, that is according to many Brits.

Watching the television is the perfect way to see in 2007 for a third of Britons and a further one in five plan to stay in but with the company of friends and family, research found.

Yorkshire Bank discovered that just five per cent of households will spend more than £200 on New Year's Eve celebrations and just 13 per cent of people anticipate that they may wake up with a hangover on January 1st.

Gary Lumby, Yorkshire Bank's head of retail, said: "We normally associate New Year's Eve with outrageous parties and excessive spending. Our research suggests this is no longer the case.

"Scenes reminiscent of EastEnders and Pat Butcher's front room with a few close friends gathered around her cocktail bar are more likely than being crammed into the Queen Vic or Scarlet's Bar in Albert Square.

"People this year appear to be helping to avoid the aggravation and expense and choosing to be more sociable by spending a fun, but perhaps more relaxing and cheaper time celebrating at home. So it will be more about loafing on the sofa than leaping into fountains!"

Midlanders are the most likely to eschew wild parties, with 37 per cent planning a night in front of the television and 23 per cent entertaining friends at home.

Those in the north-west emerged as the biggest party-poopers, however, with a third admitting that they had gone to bed before midnight in the past.
