Satnav theft creates "triple whammy"

Drivers risk being hit with a "triple whammy" of costs if their satnav system is stolen, experts warn.

Hampshire police say that criminals in the county are using the data stored on satnav systems to identify the driver's home and target it for burglary.

Peter Gerrard from Moneysupermarket.com warns that this could in turn increase their home insurance premium, meaning unlucky drivers are hit by three costs.

"If your car is broken into for a satnav system, the thieves can then use the device to obtain your home address. If they then burgle your home, your insurance premiums for both could rise as a result," said Gerrard.

"You do not need to declare having one of these devices when you take out your motor insurance, however."

To minimise the risk of theft, police are reminding drivers that they must remove the gadgets from their car when not in use, while taking all the normal measures to secure their home.

Satnav manufacturer TomTom agrees, urging drivers: "When you've finished your journey, take all elements out of the car and pack them away in the packaging and protective case provided."
