High earners celebrate 'bonus weekend'

This week is set to be a lucrative week for high earners, with many expecting a generous bonus payout.

According to Barclays Wealth, one in three bonuses are paid out in January and high earners are most likely to receive them this week.

The majority are expecting a lump sum between £5,000 and £25,000, but for City workers the average bonus is £25,085.

Despite headlines of bankers and £1,000 bottles of champagne, most will invest their money 'sensibly'.

Nearly a quarter plan to buy property in the UK, while one in five will make another kind of financial investment.

Some 15 per cent will clear their debts and 12 per cent will treat themselves to a holiday.

Jonathan Williams, spokesperson for Barclays Wealth, commented: "It is encouraging that our research shows that people are intending to be responsible with spending their bonus this year and that five per cent will be getting professional advice on how to make the most out of their money."

Barclays predicts that one in three high earners are set to receive a share of a projected £19 billion bonus pot.
