Football fans spending high in order to travel
Football fans are spending more than ever in order to travel to matches, according Virgin Money.
Fans are now committed to travelling massive distances each year in a bid to show loyalty to their team.
Virgin money found that in the average football fan travelled 1,264 miles in 2006.
Seven per cent of supporters, including the 45 per cent of Portsmouth and Middlesborough fans – notched up more than 5,000 miles, the equivalent of 12 journeys from Land’s End to John O'Groats.
Although airfares around Europe are now cheaper, UK travel remains expensive, with the cost of petrol and trains rising.
John Franklin of Virgin Money said: "English football fans' loyalty is legendary and this demonstrates the extent to which some will go to follow their teams."
He added: "Unfortunately … if all the associated costs of being a fan continue to rise, sadly many will have to stay at home and plump for the television highlights."
Virgin Money's price index shows the costs of soccer goods – such as match tickets, food at the ground and replica shirts – are also getting steeper.
