Green – it's the colour of money

Britons are conflicted when it comes to acting out their green ideals, new research shows.

A survey for personal finance website Fool.co.uk found that people often struggle to reconcile green intentions with financial prudence.

Meanwhile, Prudential found that, despite being concerned about their carbon footprint, Britons are disinclined to take the necessary measures to reduce it.

A fifth say they do not plan to fly less to reduce their emissions, with three-quarters stating that the passenger duty hike will not make them change their travel plans.

Just 11 per cent of those surveyed by Prudential pledged to fly less to reduce their carbon footprint.

Meanwhile, Fool.co.uk found that while six in ten self-confessed "non greens" have energy saving lighting, a quarter do not recycle.

David Kuo from Fool.co.uk comments: "Consumers are frequently torn between a desire to help the environment and a need to be financially prudent. Sadly the two are often diametrically opposed."

He argued: "The government can help by addressing issues that affect ordinary people without using a sledgehammer approach through green taxes.

"Ideally, we should not expect to be financially compensated for saving our planet. After all, it's the only one we have, and it is in all our interests to keep it habitable."
