Government urged to 'stand firm' over road-pricing
Government ministers have been urged to resist the growing opposition to the proposed road pricing scheme.
Environmental group, Friends of the Earth, has urged the government to "win the argument" over road pricing, warning that the current levels of opposition risk undermining the initiative to reduce car use.
A petition against the scheme on a government website received 1,183,998 signatures up to last night.
Opposition to road pricing centres on a number of arguments, including the environment and civil rights, in addition to the additional costs to motorists.
"The only way road pricing can works is to actually price people off the roads … It is big brother - and [drivers] don't want that," said Paul Biggs, spokesman for the Association of British Drivers.
A road-pricing scheme could generate revenue of £28 billion by 2025.
The government's e-petition system was launched in November 2006.
