Traffic wardens 'patrol prosperous areas'

A high number of traffic wardens and burglar alarms on a street is a sign of an attractive residential area, according to a new study.

Research by ING Direct concluded that increases in parking restrictions and the number of traffic wardens in a certain place suggest it is a "high growth potential" area.

In addition, neighbourhood watch schemes and longer school waiting lists were cited as an indicator of an area's desirability for homebuyers.

Further indicators include the amount of commuter traffic and a high volume of people on public transport, as it shows that young professionals are moving into the area.

ING Direct stated that areas with many of these features are affluent and offer high employment prospects and standard of living.

Lindsay Sinclair, chief executive of ING Direct, commented: "Traffic wardens and more crowded public transport are not things you would normally welcome, but it appears that such annoyances do come with a silver lining."

The availability of multi-cultural cuisine on the nearest high street and thicker telephone directories were also said to be signs of an increasingly popular area.
