Car insurance advice over contaminated petrol
Drivers whose cars have broken down as a result of using contaminated fuel may be able to claim on their motor insurance, the Association of British Insurers claims.
Press officer Malcolm Tarling said motorists affected by the faulty petrol crisis will probably be covered by their insurance, providing they have a comprehensive policy, as the damage done will be classed as accidental.
He urged vehicle owners to contact their car insurance companies to find out whether they are entitled to compensation and how much they will receive.
"Comprehensive insurance was never designed to cover these sort of unprecedented circumstances, but be that as it may you may find it will cover you in these circumstances," he said.
An investigation has been launched into claims that supermarkets in the south-east were knowingly selling petrol contaminated with ethanol to consumers.
Thousands of motorists have reported problems with their cars breaking down and costing them hundreds of pounds in repair bills.
