Britons 'spending on garden improvements'

Many Britons are spending money on trying to make their gardens the best in the neighbourhood, according to a new study.

Research by Cornhill Direct found that homeowners spend an average of £180 a year on improving their garden in an attempt to make it better than others on their street.

However, gardens were found to be a factor in numerous disputes, with some garden furniture causing quarrels between neighbours.

Among the items that caused grievances are wind chimes, hot tubs, water fountains and trampolines.

In addition, many residents have voiced objections to caravans being parked in the next-door driveway on the grounds of them "lowering the tone" of the area.

Cornhill Direct spokesman, Simon Coughlin, said: "Our survey shows that neighbourly disputes are a fact of life for many people across the UK.

"Arguments can be sparked by the most trivial of things."

This follows recent research by Churchill, which found that more than half of Britons are too busy to get to know their next-door neighbour, while four in ten do not care about them at all.
