Young drivers 'lack basic car maintenance skills'

Many young drivers lack many of even the most basic of car maintenance skills, according to a new survey from a car insurer.

Direct Line asserts that drivers aged 25 and under pay over £140 million in mechanic fees for relatively simple procedures that should form part of their knowledge.

For example, more than half of young drivers admit that they do not know how to change a tyre, while 37 per cent say they do not know how check brake fluid levels, the survey revealed.

Further deficiencies in car maintenance knowledge were also revealed by the company, with 55 per cent of young motorists not knowing how to change a spent headlamp bulb.

Emma Hoyler, spokesperson for Direct Line, remarked: "It's not unusual for drivers to feel a little helpless when it comes to car maintenance - however, it is important for drivers to be able to make basic safety checks on their vehicle, such as checking tyre pressure and oil level.

"These checks are essential before embarking on a long journey and we are urging motorists to ensure they are able to conduct these simple tests rather than relying on parents or mechanics for help," she added.

In related road safety news, charity Brake found that a large proportion of drivers admit to being distracted from driving by changing the radio or eating, in addition to other activities.
