Brits aspire to mums' finance skills

One in five Brits look to their mum as a financial role model when managing their money and choosing financial products, new research from Scottish Widows shows.

The bank found that 38 per cent of people believe their parents have the most positive influence on the way they handle their money.

But while dads are no doubt helpful, mothers are the number one choice when it comes to seeking out advice on money matters. They beat friends, bank managers and financial advisors, the survey shows.

With new research from Abbey revealing that one in four people think potential money problems will pose the biggest threat to their quality of life, it is hardly surprising that so many are looking for help from their nearest and dearest to get their finances in gear.

Mike Hoban, customer and brand marketing director at Scottish Widows, said: "It seems that when it comes to money, mum really is the word. We all need positive role models in life so it's great that our mums are the people we look up to financially."

However he stressed that while mums can provide some sound advice when it comes to managing money, this advice should never come as a substitute for professional financial guidance, which is crucial to help people prepare for their future.
