Young drivers 'could be uninsurable'
Young people could be priced out of the car insurance market if the number of accidents involving under-25s is not reduced, according to a financial provider.
Co-operative Insurance stated that the younger generation could be completely uninsurable if nothing is done to stem the number of young motorists killed or seriously injured on the roads.
Figures from the firm show that in the last three years, the price of insuring young drivers has increased by almost a quarter.
This compares with a two per cent increase in car insurance premiums for other motorists.
David Neave, director of general insurance, said: "If this trend continues, many young car owners will be unable to afford insurance and that will inevitably lead to a rise in the number of uninsured motorists on the roads.
"That would have major consequences for us all."
Road safety charity Brake has called for restrictions to be placed on young drivers to help cut the accident rate, such as limiting the number of passengers they are allowed to carry and imposing a night-time curfew.
