'Check insurance before making home improvements'
Homeowners have been advised to make sure they are fully insured before making any home improvements.
Churchill Insurance stated that one in five householders have accidentally damaged their home or its contents in the last year as a result of doing DIY.
Examples of DIY disasters highlighted by the firm included spilling paint on the carpet, breaking furniture after falling off a ladder and drilling into a water pipe.
The findings have prompted Churchill to remind people of the need to be fully covered in case of any accidents.
Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, commented: "Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home."
The study also showed that the annual cost of DIY accidents in the home comes to about £2.6 billion.
Meanwhile, Halifax Home Insurance has urged homeowners to make sure their garden is covered by their home insurance, as the number of thefts of garden furniture trebled between March and August last year.
