Green car insurance policies 'more expensive'

Motorists who are trying to help the environment are being stung by more expensive car insurance policies, according to a new study.

In response to the greater consumer awareness of climate change, many insurers have begun offering deals to help the environment, through means such as offsetting carbon emissions by planting trees or offering discounts on eco-friendly cars.

However, price comparison website Moneysupermarket.com has claimed that insurers who are trying to entice eco-friendly consumers are charging premiums up to 44 per cent more expensive than their standard policies.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at Moneysupermarket.com, said: "Until insurers make green premiums more competitive, my advice is to shop around for the cheapest deal that meets your needs and give some of the money you save direct to eco-friendly causes."

He stated that this would give motorists peace of mind, as the charity of their choice is receiving the money directly and they will get value for money on their car insurance.

Earlier this week, the AA stated that during the last year, the proportion of drivers purchasing cars on environmental grounds has risen from six per cent to 20 per cent.
