Newly-married couples 'should review home insurance'

Many people are under-insuring the contents of their home by not changing their policy when they get married, according to an industry group.

The Association of British Insurance (ABI) stated that while most policies automatically extend for a month after a wedding, this is only a temporary measure.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the ABI, advised newly-married couples to reassess the value of their home contents and change their insurance premium accordingly.

Meanwhile, the British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba) recommended that if people have any doubts or queries, they should seek professional advice.

Graeme Trudgill, manager of technical services at Biba, said: "Speak to your insurance broker because they will tell you how to work out the sums insured.

"They might be able to sell you a blanket policy, which might be more appropriate now that you've got married."

He added that since valuing the contents of a home is usually done when the house is first bought, many would not think to review their policy.

However, he stated if there is a catastrophe such as the house burning down, new problems could arise if they are found to be under-insured.
