Wedding guests spend hundreds on friends' nuptials
British adults spend hundreds of pounds each time a friend or relative gets married, according to a new study.
Research by Churchill found that wedding guests spend about £13.8 billion on their friends' nuptials, which works out to £340 per person each time.
Most of the money was found to go towards hen and stag parties, with each guest spending £90 at the celebrations.
More than one in five were found to embark on a weekend break in the UK to celebrate, while ten per cent journeyed abroad.
Transport, hotel bills and paying for wedding gifts was also found to be expensive, with most guests believing that approximately £60 should be spent on the happy couple.
Commenting on the research, Churchill spokesperson Abi Clark said: "The research shows that as a nation we like to make an effort at weddings.
"This is often reflected in the costs associated with the big day for example the gifts, hen and stag do's and even new outfits."
The research follows a recent survey by Lloyds TSB that showed how Britons are equally generous when buying birthday presents.
According to the study, people typically spend at least £120 on a birthday present, although they were often found to spend more on last-minute purchases.
