Motorists 'should be insured for driving overseas'
People planning to drive abroad during the bank holiday weekend have been advised to make sure they are fully insured.
Saga stated that with 3.1 million motorists driving overseas every year, it would be prudent for them to be prepared and financially covered in case of emergency.
The firm has recommended that car owners conduct a maintenance check of their vehicle before departing to help minimise the risk of breaking down while abroad.
Measures it has suggested include checking the condition of the tyres and replacing them if necessary.
Meanwhile, Saga stated highlighted certain legal requirements for British motorists in Europe, such as displaying a GB plate on the back of their vehicle.
In addition, the firm said it is compulsory for drivers to carry all relevant documentation such as car insurance and driving licenses.
The charity Age Concern recently highlighted some of the difficulties encountered by older people when they are applying for car insurance.
According to the organisation, a fifth of people aged over 65 have had their application for insurance rejected.
