Drivers 'paying higher parking charges'
Drivers in the UK are increasingly being stung by increased car parking charges, according to an insurance firm.
Direct Line stated that on average, parking charges in the UK have increased by 25 per cent in the last six years.
London was found to be the most expensive place overall to park a car, as drivers have to pay £7.99 to park for two hours in Westminster.
Parking fines were also found to be a major drain on motorists' funds, as they have paid out a total of £425 million in penalties in the last two years.
While three-quarters said they were forced to risk getting a fine because of a lack of available spaces, others said they would knowingly park illegally to avoid high parking prices.
Emma Holyer, spokesperson for Direct Line, commented: "Because of rocketing costs and limited spaces drivers are literally forced to wittingly break the law – and consequently be hit with fines in the process."
She advised motorists who are driving into a busy place to find out if there is any cheaper parking available or a park and ride scheme in the area.
This, she stated, would save motorists "serious money".
The figures come amid continuing controversy over the cost of hospital car parking fees, which has steadily increased across many parts of the UK.
