Drivers claim on school run accidents
Many parents are making claims on their car insurance after incidents during the school run, a new study has found.
Research by Sainsbury's Bank found that in the last five years, 460,000 motorists have claimed to be in an accident while taking their child to or from school.
With the school run found to be a peak time for car accidents, the firm warned parents to be aware of how to fully protect their child in case of a collision.
The warning came after the poll found that one in four parents do not always secure their child in a car seat or booster, as they are unaware of the legal requirements regarding carrying children.
Steve Johnson, head of car insurance at Sainsbury’s Bank, speculated that one reason for the high number of accidents over the short journey to school may be over-familiarity with the route, leading to parents becoming overly confident and less aware of the various hazards.
He said: "As parents, we need to treat every journey in the same manner regardless of the length or familiarity of the journey and take extra care to make sure the seats and boosters are correctly positioned and fastened."
Slough Borough Council recently carried out a random check of child car seats in the area and found that more than half were incorrectly fitted.
