More insurance claims 'made online'

Consumers are increasingly choosing to make their insurance claims over the internet, according to a financial provider.

Legal & General stated that the fact that customers can deal with insurance companies any time of day or night has led to the growing popularity of making claims online.

However, the firm stated that since some cases can involve a traumatic event, such as a burglary, these people can prefer to deal with companies in person.

Paula Johnston, spokesperson for the firm, said: "We're finding, at the moment that most of the customers want to talk to somebody about their claim because it's usually a very horrible, emotional experience for them."

She added that offering customers choice is the main thrust in the market, as they are becoming increasingly sophisticated and want different options available to them.

The firm has suggested that home insurance providers do more to ensure that customers know the full terms of their cover, such as by taking them through the relevant documents and literature.
