Wealth 'not linked to intelligence'

Rich people are not always more intelligent than those on lower incomes, according to new research.

A study by Ohio State University found no evidence of a link between intelligence and a person's wealth, saying that those of below average intelligence are just as wealthy as those with higher IQ ratings.

However, richer people were found to be the most likely to get into financial difficulties such as debt, maxing out their credit cards and missing repayments.

Jay Zagorsky, author of the study, commented: "People don’t become rich just because they are smart.

"Your IQ has really no relationship to your wealth and being very smart does not protect you from getting into financial difficulty."

He added that using various measures of financial difficulties, those with slightly better than average intelligence were found to be best off.

Mr Zagorsky advised people with low intelligence not to believe they are handicapped, while he urged those with high intelligence not to think they have an advantage.
