Newlyweds urged to check insurance

Newly-married couples have been urged to make sure that the contents of their marital home are fully insured.

Research by Churchill found that that one in ten married couples estimated the value of their wedding gifts at £3,000 at least, meaning that the value of their home contents is significantly increased.

The firm has urged couples to consider the insurance implications of receiving a large number of valuable gifts and how this could affect their insurance premiums.

Frances Browning, spokesperson for Churchill, said: "With the average cost of a wedding gift at the £60 mark, newlyweds need only to receive around 50 gifts to see the value of their household contents increase by £3,000.

"We urge all newly-married couples to check their home insurance policies to make sure they have adequate cover to suit their needs."

This follows earlier research by Churchill which found that wedding guests spend about £13.8 billion on their friends' nuptials, which works out to £340 per person each time.

Most of the money was found to go towards hen and stag parties, with many taking weekend breaks or foreign trips to celebrate.
