Holidaymakers urged to cover their caravans
The caravan industry is currently undergoing a resurgence in popularity, helped by the endorsement of celebrity figures such as Kate Mass and Jamie Oliver, it has emerged.
With caravanning named as the most popular "paid for" holiday choice in the UK, the caravan industry is now worth £16 billion, although many holidaying Britons are risking disaster by failing to insure their caravans, Cooperative Insurance Society (CIS) has warned.
The average cost of a caravan claim is £1,826, while the most common claim is theft, followed by storm damage, data from CIS reveals.
"Many people take caravan breaks to escape the pressures of everyday life," commented CIS director of general insurance David Neave.
"It is important that holidaymakers are aware of the potential dangers and keep a watchful eye on their caravan and belongings to ensure that their trip remains stress free," he added.
The company has also put together a list of top tips for caravan security, advising owners to immobilise their caravan even when stopping briefly, keep doors and windows closed and fit a good quality alarm.
Financial advice website MoneyExpert recently claimed that many consumers are wasting money by taking out single trip travel insurance policies rather than opting for annual cover.
