Motoring costs 'high priority for Britons'

British consumers rank the running costs of their car as being more important to them than the environment, a study has shown.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 29 per cent of UK drivers are more concerned about the expense of keeping their car on the road than the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, Auto Trader reports.

Chief executive of the SMMT Christopher Macgowan said: "It seems that the pocket is still more important to buyers than the environment."

Drivers may consider investing in a personal loan to finance a new car buy or pay a yearly motor insurance premium, however Mr Macgowan adds that it is important for the motoring industry to support the message that eco-friendly motoring can be inexpensive.

An earlier poll by whatcar.com also highlighted that car purchasers are increasingly concerned about vehicle price and equipment issues before the environment, although 86 per cent of respondents said that more should be done to promote green practices.

Meanwhile, to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th, a fleet of eco-friendly Ford cars will be taking part in a rally between Brighton and London.
