'Trust and reputation' most important for car buyers

Younger people are most interested in trust and reputation when deciding to buy a used car, new research has revealed.

According to Experian, the younger generation places much more importance on these factors than older consumers and are also more likely to buy from a private individual rather than a dealership.

Experian believes that the financial restrictions placed on younger drivers are leading to an increased demand for older cars, as these models are often cheap while still maintaining an element of reliability.

"Financial pressures among consumers of all ages are making them more cautious about where they spend their money and we are seeing a definite shift towards older cars," commented Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's automotive division.

There are many differences emerging in the way the generations go about looking for a new car, the survey shows, with 55 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds using the internet to research possible purchases, compared with just 29 per cent of 55 to 64-year-olds.

Motor insurance firm Zurich recently revealed that the average British motorist will spend around two weeks of their life sitting in traffic each year, as a result of the UK's increasingly congested roads.
