Holidaymakers "not doing research"
Although most British people take out travel insurance when going on holiday, many of them do not fully understand the requirements of their policies, it has emerged.
In a new report on holiday complaints, Halifax Travel Insurance has revealed that 20 per cent of UK holidaymakers are unaware that a police report is required to validate any insurance claim for theft, with 3.5 million Brits having items stolen while abroad in the last five years and failing to obtain a police document.
The report, which interviewed holiday reps across Europe, also found that accommodation staff often have to deal with people who require serious medical treatment but do not have a travel insurance policy or European health insurance card.
"We would urge holidaymakers to take details of their insurer on holiday in case they run into serious difficulties," Halifax Travel Insurance's Paul Birkhead said.
"It is important when holidaymakers take out insurance that they read the terms and conditions carefully, so they know the correct procedure for making a claim," he added.
Many Britons struggle to keep track of their spending when abroad, a report by Post Office Travel Services claimed recently, with 48 per cent of people failing to stick to their holiday budgets.
