Summer months are 'costly time for pet owners'

The number of pet owners taking out loans during the summer is likely to see an increase as rising veterinary fees take their toll, it has been claimed.

According to the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA), a greater number of vaccinations due to kennel or cattery requirements, as well as various skin problems which are more common during the warmer months, can mean that people with cats and dogs are stretched financially.

Most vaccinations are not covered by standard pet insurance policies, the BSAVA has advised, meaning some animal lovers may need extra financial help during the summer holiday period.

Speaking about the skin problems which can afflict domestic animals, the BSAVA's PR officer Mark Johnston said: "Most of them are hot spots and things like that which are not that expensive to treat, but a small percentage of them could be long-term skin problems and therefore costs do build up over a long period of time."

Moneysupermarket.com recently advised people going abroad during the summer to check they are covered by their travel insurance before indulging in any extreme activities.
