Flood risk homeowners advised to prepare
People living in areas that are susceptible to flooding have been advised to take "several simple steps" in order to minimise the risk of water damage to their properties
According to Halifax Home Insurance, around five million UK residents currently inhabit flood risk areas, with homeowners in northern England, the Midlands and central Wales recently experiencing chaotic living conditions brought on by severe flooding.
The number of people taking out home loans is likely to increase in the following weeks, with property owners looking to finance the water damage prevention measures which Halifax recommends, such as placing sandbags around doors and windows and moving furniture and possessions to safer places.
People will also need to rely on their insurance policies during these periods, according to Richard Mason of price comparison website Moneysupermarket.com: "Homeowners living in flood risk areas need to be more rigorous than others when it comes to insurance.
"They need to check the exact details of what their buildings and contents policies cover as well as the limits and excesses of both."
