Survey reveals extent of UK garden spending

British householders are planning to spend a collective £56 million on their gardens in the next three months, new research has revealed.

A survey by esure.com has shown that one in ten homeowners will spend more than £500 on plants, shrubs and outdoor equipment this summer, with some gardeners expected to use personal loans in order to take advantage of the warm weather, despite stretched finances.

However, the website also warned that the summer months represent "a peak time for opportunistic thieves" advising people to take care with any expensive outdoor items, possibly by storing them in a secure place such as a locked shed.

"With the lighter evenings and pleasant summertime temperatures, many of us will be spending more time and money on our gardens than the inside of our homes and will be splashing out on costly new garden furniture and equipment," said Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance for esure.com.

Last month, Halifax Home Insurance reported that the growing popularity of exotic plants in the UK's gardens could lead to widespread subsidence problems, with Moneysupermarket.com predicting a "summer of subsidence" for the nation's homes.
