Parents 'spending thousands' on children's rooms

The cost of the UK's "baby boom" has been highlighted in a survey by Halifax, which reveals the large amounts spent by homeowners on lavish nurseries.

According to the report, British parents spend an average of £2,628 on furnishings and decoration for their child's nursery, with many people creating luxury rooms by installing high-end plasma TVs and designer furniture.

Health and safety worries may lead to a further increase in nursery spending, the survey found, with five per cent of parents considering upgrading from a baby monitor to CCTV in order to keep an eye on their offspring.

"The new baby boom is all about the amount parents are spending to ensure their children start life in a luxury home nursery," said Vicky Emmott of Halifax Home Insurance.

"Many expectant parents are unaware how the costs of cribs, Moses baskets, baby monitors and toys soon mount up," she added.

Personal loans can help to ease the considerable financial strain created by family life, with a recent survey by Abbey Current Accounts finding that parents will spend an average of £741 entertaining their children this summer.
