Homeowners 'living in fear' of burglars
An increasing number of UK people do not feel safe in their own homes due to the threat of intruders, new research has found.
The country's householders are beginning to go to greater lengths to protect their properties from thieves, Cornhill Direct's survey reveals, with ten per cent claming that they keep an object by their bed in case of a burglary attempt.
According to the insurance company, these fears are also having a financial impact on homeowners, with 25 per cent investing in timer light systems to make their houses look occupied while they are away and eight per cent installing CCTV.
"People can substantially reduce the risk of burglary by improving their home security," said Cornhill Direct's David Keel.
"DIY stores sell a variety of items ranging from simple but effective door chains right up to more sophisticated burglar alarm systems," he added.
A study by Alliance & Leicester recently revealed that home improvements are one of the most popular reasons for personal loan applications, with many property owners looking to make value-adding alterations to their homes, as well as improving their security.
