Football fans 'need help to cover ticket costs'
The UK's football supporters are in desperate need of financial help as the cost of attending games continues to rise, it has been claimed.
According to Virgin Money's Football Fans price index, the cost of going to a football match rose by 17.8 per cent between January 2006 and June 2007, with 12 per cent of fans planning not to renew their season ticket as a result.
Mark Perryman, a member of the London England Fans supporters' group and season ticket holder at Tottenham Hotspur, has called for improved financial assistance for people who are beginning to struggle to afford their hobby.
Speaking about the price of his Spurs season ticket, Mr Perryman said: "[It] saw an eleven per cent increase on last season, which is, I believe, something like five times the rate of inflation year on year."
He added: "Certainly, spreading the cost of the purchase of your season ticket is something which would help a lot of fans."
Research by the Motley Fool has found that most personal loans are used for a "big purchase". Until more cost-spreading initiatives are introduced by football clubs, supporters may find that a personal loan can help them cover the cost of their season ticket.
