Insects 'increase car insurance claims'

The distraction of flying insects has been revealed as one of the main causes of motoring accidents during the summer months.

Insurance provider esure conducted a survey which found that 75 per cent of drivers admit to losing concentration due to the presence of rogue insects in their car, with 21 per cent claiming to have taken their hands off the driving wheel in order to deal with an airborne intruder.

The study rated insects as the second most common summer driving distraction after strong sunlight, with the company advising motorists to keep their cool when behind the wheel and ensure that their vehicles are adequately insured.

"With an influx of insects expected to hit the UK, it's worrying that over three quarters of the driving population are so easily distracted by bugs when they're behind the wheel," commented Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure.

An earlier survey by the DVLA found that half a million UK motorists have had an accident caused by insect-related distractions.

Sainsbury's Bank has urged car owners to shop around for insurance after it revealed that one in five people used only one quote when last insuring their vehicle. Personal loans can help make insurance costs more manageable.
