Holidaymakers told to remember travel insurance

Many holidaymakers are still failing to obtain insurance for their holidays, with some people considering it "non-essential" while others simply forget.

According to the Post Office Travel Services, the number of Britons who admit to going away without insurance is "extremely alarming" - a recent survey by the provider discovered that 47 per cent of people have taken a holiday without a travel insurance policy.

Of these holidaymakers, 46 per cent felt that they did not need insurance and viewed it as a waste of money, while 14 per cent claimed that it had simply slipped their mind.

"Travel insurance is all too often forgotten in the excitement of getting ready to go on holiday, or even worse, it is considered by some to be non-essential," said John Howells, head of travel at the Post Office.

He added that commonplace occurrences such as losing a bag or having to visit a doctor could result in hundreds of pounds being lost without an insurance policy, asking "why take the risk?"

Earlier this week, Tom Griffiths of gapyear.com advised people on round-the-world trips to make sure that they are covered for every eventuality. Personal loans can help to deal with travel costs such as insurance.
