Health card 'cannot replace travel insurance'

Although many Brits may still be ignorant of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), they have also been warned that having one is not an adequate substitute for a travel insurance policy.

Moneysupermarket.com has revealed that 59 per cent of UK people still think that the old E111 form will cover them for medical treatment in EU countries, despite the fact that this document was replaced by the EHIC two years ago.

While all holidaying Brits should have this card with them on their travels, they are advised to supplement it with adequate travel insurance, as the EHIC offers only basic reimbursement for small medical bills, the price comparison website stated.

"As well as offering much more comprehensive medical treatment cover, travel insurance protects you for lost or stolen possessions, holiday cancellation, personal liability and a range of other costly possibilities," said Richard Mason, director of insurance at the website.

"The trick is to shop around for the right level of cover for you at the right price," he added.

Sports fans visiting France for this month's rugby World Cup have been advised to obtain comprehensive travel cover by the Association of British Insurers. A personal loan can help people to deal with insurance and other travel expenses.
