Car horns 'can create road rage'
The large number of car insurance claims made every year may have something to do with the fact that British drivers are over-zealous with their horns, according to new research.
A survey by esure.com has reported that 90 per cent of UK motorists regularly use their horn inappropriately, with the nation's drivers sounding their horns over 30 billion times a year collectively.
In addition, the study found that the consequences of such horn use could be quite serious, with 30 per cent of drivers admitting to feeling 'stressed' when hooted at and 75 per cent believing that the noise from car horns can result in road rage.
"Modern life is fast-paced and high pressured which is why people often get impatient and agitated while driving," said Mike Pickard, head of underwriting at esure.
Steve Stradling, professor of transport psychology at Napier University, called for greater "civility" among drivers, adding: "Sounding your horn at other road users breaks the rules of the road, which are intended to facilitate safe progress for all."
Price comparison website Confused.com recently advised motorists to let their insurer know of any changes to their personal circumstances as soon as possible. Car insurance can be made more affordable with a personal loan.
