Homeowners 'use kitchen to store valuables'
Many Britons tend to leave their most valuable and treasured items in their kitchens, research from Legal & General has found.
A full 73 per cent surveyed admitted that they leave items such as keys, mobile phones, wallets and medication in the kitchen.
Some 16 per cent even admitted that they leave bank statements and other documents with their personal financial details lying about.
Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal & General's general insurance business stated: "The look and feel of today's homes is changing to reflect the changing demographics of different households.
"The items that people leave lying around in their kitchen make an interesting statement about the way people live their lives. It also raises concern about the security of those items in the home."
By leaving items lying around in the kitchen, people increase the likelihood that they may be burgled, making a home contents insurance policy particularly important.
Legal & General also found in another study that when buying a home, the kitchen is the room that house-hunters put the most emphasis on. A personal loan can offer a way of coping with insurance costs.
