Lost car keys 'cost millions'

Lost car keys are costing British drivers a fortune, with the cost of replacing a car key four times what it was ten years ago, it has been claimed.

According to Britannia Rescue, ten per cent of drivers do not have a spare set of car keys, which makes it all the more expensive if their only set goes missing.

The vehicle insurance firm has calculated that the total bill for nearly half a million motorists who have had to replace car keys could be up to £98 million.

Spokesman Martin Milliner said: "Accessing vehicles built since 1998 is generally more time-consuming and expensive for drivers.

"[This is] due to the introduction of increasingly sophisticated alarms, immobilisers, and shielded locks."

He went on to say that the costs could be even higher if work needs to be carried out on the ignition or the car's security system.

The AA has said that modern car keys should be treated as if they are expensive jewellery, due to the cost of replacing them. A personal loan can help motorists cope with driving expenses.
