Using own car for business purposes 'risky'
A large number of British motorists may be unaware that using their own vehicle at work could invalidate their insurance policy, it has emerged.
Private motor insurance policies will only provide cover for people to drive to and from work, although up to five million drivers are thought to be using their cars for additional business-related matters, according to Gocompare.com.
The financial comparison site stated that a growing number of UK motorists are now using their personal vehicles for "informal or ad-hoc company business", due to the fall in popularity of company car schemes.
"If workers use their own cars while on company business, no matter how infrequently, we would urge them to check their policy to make sure they are properly insured," said Gocompare.com managing director Hayley Parsons.
"Employers should talk to workers about the necessity of having the correct level of cover before they undertake any private car business journeys," she added.
A recent survey by Moneysupermarket.com found that the Scottish cities of Dundee and Aberdeen have the cheapest average car insurance quotes in the UK.
