UK drivers given fog warning
British motorists have been urged to take extra care on the roads this winter, after the Met Office forecast unusually high levels of fog throughout November.
Insurance firm RIAS has advised car owners to be particularly mindful of their safety when getting behind the wheel in the coming weeks, as heavy fog represents "one of the most dangerous driving hazards on the roads".
With visibility likely to be severely restricted, drivers should avoid having to make an insurance claim by keeping a safe distance from the car in front, maintaining an even speed and checking the condition of their fog lights, the over 50s insurer stated.
RIAS managing director Janet Connor said: "Despite possible mild weather conditions this winter, drivers still need to be aware that driving in foggy conditions, particularly at night, can carry its own risks.
"Driving in busy traffic on a clear day is challenging enough, but you should be extra careful when driving in fog, as visibility can seriously deteriorate in a matter of minutes."
The weeks immediately following October's clock change are noted for a sudden increase in road accidents and personal injury claims, the AA stated recently.
