Christmas shoppers urged to check insurance

Some Christmas shoppers have been well-prepared this year, spreading the expensive task over the course of a period of months, new research has shown.

However, that preparedness could be undermined by not having adequate home insurance cover, Abbey has warned.

According to a study by the bank, more people began this year's Christmas shopping in October and November than in December. In fact, a particularly forward-minded six per cent went gift-hunting during the January sales.

Nevertheless, the bank warned that these people could be exposed by the narrow cover provided for the Christmas period by many insurers.

"Preparing for Christmas early and spreading the cost of buying presents throughout the year is a sensible move," said Prasad Shastri, head of home insurance at Abbey.

"Sadly, though, too many insurance policies don't take this into consideration."

The advice follows Bradford & Bingley's call for Christmas holidaymakers to check that gifts in luggage are covered by their travel insurance policies. Insurance costs can be made more manageable with a personal loan.
