Car buyers 'more aware of green issues'

Environmental issues are becoming increasingly important on the forecourt, one market analyst has claimed.

According to Experian, an increased knowledge of green matters among car customers means that dealers now have to field more questions about vehicle excise duty and the cost of running greener cars.

Nevertheless, the purchasing habits of customers are yet to reflect this change in attitude, with sales of diesel cars increasing by five per cent over the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2006.

"This suggests that the although the environment doesn't completely influence their choice or car, consumers are more aware of the extra costs and want more information upfront before making a decision," said Kirk Fletcher of Experian's automotive division.

To help dealers in such situations, Experian has launched a new environmental report on used cars.

According to the analyst, super-minis are the most popular type of car in the UK, with the Ford Fiesta the best selling model in the sector. A personal loan can be used to fund a car purchase.
