Consumers 'to shell out £5 billion online in December'
Online shopping is set to exceed £5 billion in December, with the 3rd of the month likely to be the most popular day to shop over the internet, it has been claimed.
According to Apacs, the UK payments association, the number of online shoppers has doubled since 2002 to around 30 million.
This level of growth means it is imperative that consumers protect themselves from online fraudsters by maintaining anti-virus software and only using trustworthy websites.
Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs, said: "We reckon that Monday December 3rd is likely to be one of the busiest online shopping days of the year.
"Registering your card with MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa can provide extra protection when you shop online."
However, the global credit squeeze has led to a fall in consumer confidence, according to Cornhill Direct, which says that 30 per cent of UK consumers intend to spend less than normal this Christmas.
A personal loan could help ease the pressure of festive purchases.
