People 'advertising home contents to thieves'

Too many householders are leaving the contents of their homes visible to thieves, a new study has found.

Some 15 million homes are advertising their wares through windows, with PCs, flat screen televisions, jewellery and antiques regularly on show to passersby, according to LV=.

In fact, 59 per cent of householders have admitted to having a standard or flat screen television in full view, which could prove too much of a temptation to criminals.

As well as moving things from view and shutting curtains and blinds, householders are advised not to leave packaging outside.

Martin Milliner, spokesperson for LV=, said: "Burglary is frequently committed by opportunist criminals who see a quick way of making a fast buck.

"Thieves are much more likely to target your property if they can see items worth stealing and high value electronic items are just the kind of thing they are looking for."

Research from First Direct has shown that that UK homes contain gadgets and electrical equipment worth a collective £74 billion.
