Homeowners get tips for happy Christmas

The nation's householders have been advised to reassess their home insurance and be extra vigilant for thieves over the festive period.

Insurance firm Direct Line said that property owners may need to increase the limit of their home contents cover because of the expensive presents and other valuable items likely to be kept in the house.

The insurer also urged students to be careful with their possessions over the Christmas break, as unoccupied university accommodation is an "ideal target" for burglars at this time of year.

"It is a good idea for students to take valuable items home with them over the Christmas period, wherever possible," said Direct Line's head of home insurance Andrew Lowe.

"Christmas is a good time to install simple security devices to deter thieves," he added.

Stating that most burglars operating at Christmas are "opportunists", Mr Lowe advised homeowners to keep expensive gifts and other items out of sight.

Burglary and theft accounts for 38 per cent of all crime in the UK, according to a report from Liverpool Victoria. Insurance costs can be made easier to handle with a personal loan.
