Home insurance "essential" for Christmas

British property owners have been urged to check that their home contents are adequately insured before Christmas celebrations get underway.

Specialist insurance firm RIAS said that this type of cover is "more essential at Christmas than at any other time of the year", with valuable presents and expensive food and drink items causing the average value of home contents to rocket.

According to the company, which provides insurance products designed for the over 50s, the value of items kept in a home can increase by as much as £5,000 over the festive period, meaning that people should not attempt to enjoy Christmas without insurance.

"The threat of burglary along with the potential for accidental damage during the Christmas period cannot be ignored," said RIAS managing director Janet Connor.

"But unlike motor insurance, people seem less inclined to review their household contents insurance on a regular basis," she added.

Insurer Direct Line recently advised students returning home for the holidays to take their possessions with them, as unoccupied university accommodation can make an "ideal target" for thieves. Personal loans can make insurance costs more manageable.
