Survey gives Christmas shoppers food for thought

Food is the most popular Christmas purchase among UK consumers, a new survey has revealed.

Research from PayPal discovered that 71 per cent of the nation's festive shoppers are planning to buy food items for their loved ones this Christmas, while 70 per cent also intend to splash out on CDs and DVDs. Alcoholic drinks were the next most popular gift idea, with 65 per cent buying wine and spirits.

The internet payments service also advised Christmas shoppers to check the price of goods in online stores before hitting the shops this December.

PayPal's shopping expert Cristina Hoole said: "There are plenty of bargains to be had by shopping online compared to the high street.

"If you're prepared to do some digging around on the internet, you'll find fantastic and original ideas to ensure you deliver the most creative presents without breaking the bank this Christmas."

Credit reference agency Callcredit recently urged people to be sensible with their Christmas spending to prevent a "financial hangover" in January.
