Brits 'head abroad to shop'
The recent strength of the pound in global exchange rates has meant that an increasing number of UK people are taking shopping trips overseas, a new survey has stated.
Research from private bank Cater Allen shows that 2.2 million Britons will travel abroad to do their Christmas shopping this year, with these "rate trippers" expected to spend a collective £263 million over the festive period.
New York was found to be favourite destination for Christmas bargain-hunters due to the strength of the pound against the dollar, although shopping excursions to Paris, Rome and Sydney are also popular.
Sally Ann Watts, head of marketing at Cater Allen, said: "Clearly the strong pound is having a real impact on shoppers and many are heading abroad to find a bargain this Christmas and take advantage of the favourable exchange rate, with the US dollar in particular."
According to a survey by Halifax, the average Briton will spend £400 on presents this Christmas. Personal loans can ease the financial burden of the festive period.
