UK borrowers ask mums for money

Research into borrowing habits in the UK has revealed that the person people most turn to for money is their mother.

A recent YouGov report for PayPal has shown that 48 per cent of Britons have lent, on average, £898.52 to their friends and family in the past year.

Christina Hoole, spokesperson for PayPal, commented that borrowing from friends and family is a case of little but often, but warns that borrowing money from people close to them can affect their relationship.

Ms Hoole remarked that people should take care to pay money back to their loved ones, but that there should be no embarrassment over asking for money back either.

"I don't think there's a stigma anymore. To be honest £26 million is what we owe or are owed and that just shows that we are feeling a little bit more stretched and turning to alternatives, ie our friends and family."

PayPal offers a secure online method for sending and receiving money transfers.
